What these numbers mean

Characters use Intl.Segmenter grapheme clusters, so a combined accent or family emoji can count as one. The whitespace-free count removes clusters made only of JavaScript whitespace. Words use word-like segments for the current page language; Chinese and Japanese do not require spaces. Browser segmentation can vary, and counts need not match an editor or submission system.

CRLF counts as one line break; CR, LF and Unicode line/paragraph separators also break lines. A trailing break includes the empty last line. Paragraphs are groups of nonblank lines separated by blank lines. Original whitespace and Unicode normalization are preserved.

Input is limited to 100,000 UTF-16 units and 400,000 UTF-8 bytes, with 45-second checkpoints. More statistics separate Unicode code points, UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes. Browsers without Intl.Segmenter show a clearly labeled code-point/whitespace fallback.

Common questions

Why does one emoji have several numbers?

A visible emoji may combine several code points, each stored using one or two UTF-16 units and multiple UTF-8 bytes. The main character number counts the visible grapheme cluster when segmentation is available.

Is my text uploaded?
